Tiara (Hobart)
Tiara is a BullTerrier x and is around 2 years old she is very loving and affectionate towards everybody and is great with kids and very much loves the belly rubs. On the first day here she didnt seem stressed she loved looking around the house. When i was sitting on the couch and she was wondering around on the floor she seemed abit unsettled but if she could get on the couch or chair she was fine and was more than happy to be left alone to sleep. Tiara Is Very Quiet rarely barks the only time she did was when we was making tea and she wanted it and followed us around so i gave her some bones from butcher and put her in crate and she was ok with that. Tiara is Completely Toilet trained. At bed time i put her in the crate in lounge room for about 30 mins or so she whinges but doesn’t bark but has like a low howl. Tiara will sit when asked. I have also found she doesn’t really answer to her name but if i pat my leg she comes to me. Tiara is also a mellow dog doesn’t run around the house i haven’t really seen her run at all. One thing tiara is great at is clearing a room she can be very toxic lol. She has grown very attached to me she follows me everywhere and if my housemate is taking her outside to toilet she goes and then has to come search for me if i get up she is right behind me. at the moment the problem we are having is she jumps on couch and chairs all the time am trying to teach her only when invited but proving a little difficult but with everything else she is a quick learner. Tiara will require a secure yard and someone who is home most of the time as she loves to be around people and may have a bit of seperation anxiety. Tiara travels very well in a car and does enjoy going to the beach.
Update from Foster Carer 11/5/2012
Tiara has improved alot in the time i have had her, she knows when bed time is i don’t hear any whining or howling at all anymore. I have made a area in the lounge room for her and when i dont want her on the couch i tell her no and she sometimes puts her head down and trots over to her bed, she is not a pig with her food she can leave food for hours and just go back whenever but i find when i feed her things like off meat cuts and mince stuff she chows down like its the best thing ever. I have had no problems with her trying to jump the fence anymore(4 foot) it was only the first day she was hear now she doesn’t even worry about the dog next door barking, i like to leave the back door open for her and she wonders in and out and always comes when called. She has no interest in toys of any kind. she loves her sleep, sleeps more than a newborn, have just started taking her on walks and she loves it, to begin with she pulled very hard on the lead and was dragging me along but i usually stop and say no, now i find she keeps the lead tight but doesnt pull. She doesnt like being on the road she is quick to get off when crossing roads, friendly with all people and kids, kids love her cause Tiara loves to give kisses. Tiara is an amazing dog and whoever adopts her will have a friend for life.
Atlas (Hobart)
Atlas is a Staffy x, around 1 year old.
As a puppy he is excited by new experiences (sounds, sights and smells), however he can be a bit timid and may need gentle introductions.
Atlas chews but has discovered the joy of a kong toy and is happy to sit and chew on his special toy.
Atlas is beginning to learn basic commands and can ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘come’ when motivated however he requires plenty of patience as he learns **slowly* *. He is also toilet trained and lasts the night inside without having to go outside.
Atlas walks well on leash and likes to stop, sniff and enjoy the world. *
*Atlas gets along well with other dogs and loves to play, often bouncing around inviting his foster sister to play. At night he’s happy to lay quietly and be pet.*
Update from Foster Carer 11/5/2012
*Meet Atlas — the happy, sweet, cuddle monster who’s sure to add excitement to your life.*
Atlas approaches the world around him with avid excitement and glee. He gets along well with other dogs and loves to play, often bouncing around inviting his foster sister to play. He can be sensitive to some new experience, such as loud noises or crowds and occasionally needs gentle introductions to not overwhelm him.
He walks well on leash and, like all dogs, loves his walks. As soon as you pick up the leash he turns into a ball of excitement. Once the walk begins he soon calms down, walking at your side and sometimes stopping to sniff and enjoy the world.
Atlas is still a puppy at heart and requires plenty of dog toys to avoid him entertain himself by digging holes and chewing on sticks.
At night he loves nothing more than laying down with you and cuddling, but is happy to settle quietly in his own bed.
He is toilet trained and will “come”, “sit” and “down” when asked.
Tulip (Hobart)
Notes from Tulips Foster mum (5th April, 2012): Tulip is a very timid little girl with strangers at the moment but is improving quickly, she will meet and greet with other dog’s after the usual sniffing etc, loves to play with toys, she will not ‘fetch’ but collects up the toys in one place for my two dog’s to play with her.
She doesn’t really like to be picked up as she is not confident enough yet, she comes for a pat and food but have found if just one hand is extended to her she is fine. She can sit and wait for food or treats and is very gentle to take it from you. Recall isn’t that good at the moment as she is still timid to come very close.
She lives with my two dog’s male and female and get’s on well with other’s big and small after the first 10mins or so to check them out. Has a tendency to sometimes have a little ‘warning’ growl if things don’t go her way but has not bitten.
She is house trained and doesn’t bark unnecessarily. She does walk on a Harness but is unsure of crossing road’s.
She has been left for by herself with no problems, she get’s very exited on your return and hops around like a rabbit! Tulip is very attentive and learn’s very quickly she travels well and very quietly in the car , sits quietly in her harness.
She need’s to be brushed regularly as like all Jack Russel’s does shed her coat. Loves cheese, raw carrots and liver treat’s. She will also ‘pinch’ food if left in her reach. I tell her I am going to ‘the shop’ and to mind the house, then she knows you will be back. All together she is a lovely little girl and just needs to get her confidence back,I think maybe she would be better with another dog for company as she seams to prefer this. She needs time and patience and the love of a family to make her own.
Lefty (Hobart)
Lefty is a gorgeous Border Collie X who is slowly learning to build trust & gain confidence around people & other dogs with the help of a trainer / behaviourist. Under this guidance, he is learning to socialise & overcome his fears when walking in public on a lead. It has been strongly recommended that work with the behaviourist continues & could be needed for a long period of time. For this reason, I wouldn’t recommend a first time dog owner. I feel Lefty would best suit someone who has experience with dogs, & has the time, patience & energy to bring out the best in him. It has been suggested that he may always have limitations, but as he progresses only time will tell. Lefty currently resides with 2 other dogs & a foster-carer that is home a lot of the time. As he is quite anxious, & highly energetic I would recommend some form of company during the day to alleviate boredom & potential problems. At this point in time Lefty is unable to go off-lead, (something we are working on), so will need an ‘outlet’ for his energy. We play one hour sessions of ‘fetch’ in the yard a couple of times a day, plus swimming in the pool along with an on-lead walk. He will also play chase with his foster sisters. Lefty is living in a calm environment with adults & has settled well. As he can get excitable in play, & has a tendency to chase, jump, & occasionally nip, he would not be suitable around children. Lefty loves cuddles & is very affectionate, but also needs ‘space’. He is crate trained & I would strongly recommend that this continues as he occasionally needs to retreat to his ‘den’ when something unfamiliar is happening, along with sleeping in it inside overnight. He has settled well into a daily routine, travels well in the car & is not a fussy eater. He trains easily with treats & lots of praise!
The ideal home for Lefty would be a property with another dog where there would be no pressure or high expectations for him to repeatedly be in public. He is extremely affectionate with his own people but does take time to warm up to others. If you are an experienced dog owner and would really like to make a difference in the life of a dog, this boy may be the one.
Johnny (Burnie)
Johnny — Burnie Dogs Home 12 months old kelpie x
Johnny has settled very well into his new foster home on 25 acres. His foster mum has been able to give us a few points on Johnny:
Johnny has a lot of good points and a small amount of bad points that his Foster Mum is working through.
- Settled almost immediately, he is very obedient and a fast learner.
- Great with other dogs, good with cats but will chase poultry / ducks
- Very well behaved and calm in the house
- Loves toys and having a stick thrown for him
- Loves the water/swimming
- Barks at the horses trying to make them play
- Not a town dog, stays on the property and has no desire to wander (Farm fencing)
- Sometimes jumps up in excitement. His foster mum is working on this and he is slowly improving hence her suggestion of no children. His foster mum doesn’t think he would ever harm a child, rather Johnny jumping up and frightening a child or knocking them over and has suggested he would be ideal for a couple who want a fun dog to enter their life.
Sammy (Hobart)
Sammy is a large Black & Tan Doberman/Kelpie and we estimate his age is between 2–3 years old. In size and shape, Sammy can be compared to that of a greyhound and in life can be described as a big friendly kid. He generally wants to know what you are doing, once he is satisfied all is okay he is happy to lie down somewhere and dream. Sammy is fully toilet trained and sleeps indoors on the dog couch. Although Sammy is a tall dog he doesn’t really do to much wrong, with the following being his misdemeanors.
- Digs holes (only in dirt, not in lawns)
- Drags plastic dog bowls outside and chews on them
- Will destroy dog beds made with filling
Sammys ideal home would be with somebody active who enjoys going for walks. He is quite strong to walk, but if using a body harness or halti Sammy will walk beside you and under control. Unfortunatley he has only one eye, having been found with a badly damaged left eye. He gets around fine with one eye but occasionally bumps into things. Sammy has no aggression in him whatsoever and gets on with dogs all shapes and sizes.![383772_202908773136715_100002527813468_425610_1475162699_n[1]](http://dogshomesoftas.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/383772_202908773136715_100002527813468_425610_1475162699_n11-200x200.jpg)

Missy / Mischief (Hobart)
My name is Missy. A lot of things in my life are new and they’re all great! I came to live with my foster mum a couple of months ago and have been having the best time! I get lots of food to eat now and mum says I’ve put on weight; my ribs don’t show any more! I get MEAT every day, can you believe that?! I also have new friends! Mum’s dog, Hugo, has been showing me the ropes. First, he showed me where we go to the toilet. It took a while, but I got the hang of it and love being told I’m a good girl when I get it right which is all the time now. AND he’s been teaching me how to play…I never knew about that before! We run around and wrestle or chase things…Mum joins in, too. He also said mum wouldn’t mind if I slept on the sofa, and he was right! The best thing is that I’ve always got someone to cuddle up to now. I LOVE cuddles!!! I live with a cat and a goat as well and they’re my friends, too. We even go to play with horses, or other dogs at the beach or at their houses, so life’s full fo fun! Mum’s introduced me to lots of people and they’ve all been really nice, patting me and giving me dog lollies. Mum’s taught me how to walk nicely on a lead and to come back when she calls me. As I always get a doggy treat when I do, that’s not hard! I’m getting used to riding in cars, too, cos we always go somewhere good to play. I’d love to stay here, but mum says there are lots of other dogs back at the dogs’ home who need help just like I did, so, I’m ready for my new home. May I come and live with you?
