Canine Commendations
Canine Commendations are awarded annually to dogs who have demonstrated special acts of service or heroism.
Commendations for Service to Canines are awarded annually to individuals or organisations who show a special commitment to caring for dogs.
To nominate a dog, person, business or organisation for a Commendation in 2012, please send all details (including your contact details) to Canine Commendations, Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania, P.O. Box 7, Lindisfarne, TAS 7015 Closing date for nominations is September 2nd 2012
Commendations are presented on or around World Animal Day ( October 4th) each year.
2011 Commendations
Three commendations have been presented this year to mark World Animal Day
To Dog Draco for his dedication, commitment and loyal service to Nikki Hayes (Canine Commendation)
To Jackie Middleton for her vigilant action in saving the life of a dog (Commendation for Service to Canines)
To Brightside Sanctuary for outstanding commitment to caring for dogs in need (Commendation for Service to Canines)
Nominations are now open for 2012 commendations.
Draco is Nikki Hay’s assistance dog - he is a seizure alert dog.
Ms Hays has epilepsy and Draco is able to warn her of an on-coming seizure. This enables Ms Hays to lie down prior to a seizure, to avoid falling and potentially hitting her head in a fall.
This ‘early detection’ system enables Ms Hays to carry out daily life knowing that Draco will alert her if she needs to take steps to protect herself prior to a seizure.
Jackie Middleton saved the life of a tethered dog who was choking after jumping from the back of a stationary ute. The lead which was restraining the dog was too long – it allowed the dog to reach the side of the ute’s tray. Over the side he went but couldn’t reach the ground and was left dangling. Thanks to Jackie, the dog survived. When this dog’s guardian angel came to the rescue, she found the now limp dog too heavy to lift. She managed to lever the dog onto her lap which took the pressure off the lead but the dog remained limp and unresponsive. Her calls for help were answered and others arrived to assist, including the dog’s owner. After a few anxious minutes, the dog came around and a subsequent trip to the vet gave the all clear.
Brightside Sanctuary works tirelessly to find loving homes for dogs and puppies rescued from puppy farm situations and to educate the community on the compassionate and responsible care of animals.
2010 Commendations
Dog Phoenix of Devonport — Phoenix’s owner, Lorraine Jessep suffers from diabetes. Phoenix is specially trained to detect the symptoms of hypoglycemia. When Ms Jessep’s blood glucose levels run low, Pheonix alerts her thus avoiding Lorraine slipping into a coma.
Dog Lottie of Hobart who provides loyal assistance to Lucy Henry.
Dog Rosie of Launceston who valiantly alerted her family to a house fire and potentially saved lives.
Norman Fearon (85) of Seven Mile Beach for his life-long commitment to the care of dogs in need
Darren Balsley for his rescue and care of an abandoned litter of puppies
Staff at Sea FM for their commitment to helping dogs in need.
Receiving a special Family Commendation was Dog Lassie and her human family Jorgen Jorgenson and Grace Mulholland for their rescue of dog Molly at Kingston Beach in September 2010. It was their team effort which enabled little dog Molly to be rescued from a cliff face where she had been stranded for 5 days.
Nominations are now open for next year.
